8.8 million people have visited the Louvre



With approximately 8.8 million people visited in 2011, tops probably Louvre once again the lists of the world's most visited museum. Visitor numbers are soaring,and has increased by five percent from 2010, the Telegraph.

This represents more than 24,100 guests every day throughout the year. One of the three are French, while the museum is experiencing growing number of visitors from America and China.

By comparison, it is estimated that about one million visitors each year visit the most visited Norwegian attractions, the Vigeland Sculpture Park and the Opera inOslo.

The most famous among Louvres about 35,000 works of art is NOK Mona Lisaand Venus de Milo. Controversial is the large glass pyramid at the entrance. It was added to the museum in 1989.

What about the others?
According to the travel magazine Travel + Leisure, these museums also among the largest in the world, behind the Louvre. The list was published just before Christmas 2011, and is not based on 2011 figures.

Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, Washington DC with 6,800,000visitors.
British Museum, London, with 5,800,000 visitors.
Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City, with 5,200,000 visitors.
Tate Modern, London, with 5,000,000 visitors.
American Museum of Natural History, New York City, with 5,000,000 visitors.
National Gallery, London, with 4,900,000 visitors.
National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, with 4,700,000 visitors.
Vatican, Rome, with 4,600,000 visitors.

The list of the 20 most visited is dominated by Europe and the USA. Asia's mostvisited will follow this list will be the National Museum of Korea in Seoul.
