Edvard Munchs Madonna solgt på Christies i New York onsdag

Edvard Munchs Madonna ble solgt for 650 500 dollar på auksjon hos Christie's i New York onsdag. Det tilsvarer 4,6 millioner kroner.

På forhånd var denne utgaven som var et farge litografi, vurdert til mellom 4,2 og 5,6 millioner kroner, så tilslaget viser at kjøpelysten ikke var helt på topp.

Tilsammen ble det solgt kunst for 57 millioner kroner. Cirka 40 prosent av arbeidene gikk i retur, noe som også bekrefter at kunstmarkedet sliter i øyeblikket.

The sale was led by Edvard Munch’s Madonna, 1895-1902, an extraordinary work recognized as one of the artist's most mysterious and important images, encapsulating his fascination with the connections between life and death, desire and fear, holiness and carnality, sold for $650 500 (estimate: $600,000-800,000) – pictured on top. In addition to its pictorial complexity, Munch's Madonna is an extraordinary technical achievement. Originally intended to be printed exclusively in black, Munch ultimately deviated from this notion by experimenting with color. In doing so, Munch implemented a variety of techniques to form a remarkably rich and striking image. This impression is in very good condition and printed on a very fine thin sheet of Japanese paper.
